Mullingar 5 – Carlow 22
Carlow came away from Mullingar on Sunday with a good 22 - 5 pts victory in the 1st round of the 2nds cup. Number 10 Barry Purcell opened the scoring with a penalty. The outhalf followed up with a breakaway try under the posts after a strong Mark Slye tackle dislodged the ball from an opposition back. The Purcell conversion gave Carlow a 10 nil lead.
Next Mullingar took a tap penalty on the Carlow 22 and ran over for a soft unconverted try to make it 5 – 10. On the point of half time, with a Mullingar centre
sin-binned, good passing by Keating, Couchman and Kelly led to prop Larry McGrath grounding near the post for a converted try. Carlow led 17 – 5 at half time.
In the second half, Carlow brought on all their subs. Both sides missed penalties and the half remained scoreless till five minutes from time. Then JJ Waddock took a another good lineout ball on the Mullingar 22. Scrumhalf Ian Pearson cut through a crowded field but was held up on the line. In the follow up ruck Wes Whitton squeezed over for the final try and for the final 22 – 5 score.
