CARLOW U14S VS WEXFORD 15-12
Leinster League

Saturday saw our first match of 2016,as we took on Wexford in Oakpark.Todays match saw captain Evan Browne lead his men in the unusual sight of a dry morning, with only the muck to contend with. The first half saw two very evenly matched teams play with a lot of power & strength in the scrums.Carlow faired out better in the line outs with captain Evan Browne winning most of the ball.It took until the 17th minute ,for a break from midfield play & a break in Wexfords defence, for Ben Hovendan to cross the line for Carlows first try of the game, the conversion from the wings was missed. The score now 5-0 to Carlow, boosted confidence a bit causing Wexford a few unforced errors. In the 20th minute Wexford stepped up a gear putting Carlows defence to the test, the boys held up well for a time with a lot of stop & go play but Wexford came out the better, with a try just before the half time whistle, again conditions didnt help & the conversion was missed. The half time score 5-5.
Early in the second half Wexford ploughed through Carlows defence with their second try of the game, this time the conversion was scored right in front of the posts, the score now 12-5 to our visitors.Wexford seemed to lose discipline, further into the second half, giving Carlow advantage with penalties & scrums.A fine ball off the back of the scrum from Alan Owens made way to Conor Hennessy who ran his legs off for another great try for Carlow, the score now 12-10 & all to play for.Carlow improved immensly today in their tackling & rucks were well cleared out in the second half.A ball from the back of the ruck saw Evan Browne make great ground towards the try line, with Wexford bodies being dragged along with his power & team mate Cian Clarke along side.Just short of the line ,under many bodies,Cian picks up the ball to touch down for another Carlow try, again no conversion but a full time score of 15-12 to our boys.MOTM went to Conor Hennessy.
