Carlow u18’s faced Boyne Rfc in the premier Leinster league on sat in drogheda, in what turned out to be a hard struggle for the Carlow side. Carlow found it very hard to get into their stride on Saturday  and from the first whistle were pushed back into their own 22 by a very big  and physical Boyne side. Carlow struggled to match the opposition scrum and were driven back for the first time this season, but against the the run of play Carlow won a ball against the head and with a quick break from the Carlow backs they worked their way up the field and sent hooker Liam slater in for a try in the right hand corner. Leaving the score at 5 – 0. After the kick off carlow again struggled to get any structure to their game, and spent a lot of time defending their own line. Even though Boyne had the larger pack Carlow did succeed at the line out and on numerous occasions set up a maul a drove Boyne back setting up a good platform for the Carlow backs. Near the end of the first half Carlow produced a couple of nice plays between the forwards and backs and sent winger Jody Murphy over in the corner with some sharp movement of the ball. Score at half time Carlow 10 Boyne 0. The second half just like the first was a hard fought battle with the Boyne forwards taking the game to Carlow. About ten minutes into the half Carlow got a penalty just outside the Boyne 22 which Mark Mcdermott converted giving carlow a 13-0 lead. Carlow introduced 4 subs in the second half including Leinster u18 prop Quinlan Kelly and Dean Hayden who return from injury. Boyne got a try with 15 minutes to go after pounding carlow’s line for about 2 or 3  minutes, this left the score at 13 – 5. Carlow held out for the remainder of the game and were delighted to leave Boyne with the win. This win leaves Carlow on top of the table with one game to go against Wicklow this Saturday at home with a 12pm kick off, and also a place in the Leinster semi final. Man of the match was full back Robert Browne with Aiden Curran and Aiden Rapley also playing well.
